Bristlecone Pine Tree

On a windswept mountain in Nevada are the oldest trees on Earth. The Bristlecone Pines scientific name is Pinus Aristata. It is amazing because these trees have experienced 5,000 years of drought, insects, bitter winter winds, disease, and other ravages of nature that can eventually destroy all living things.

You may not be able to provide the habitat of the Nevada mountainside, but you should have very little problem growing these fascinating pines. These pines are adaptable so they are at home in nearly any site. They grow as irregular, open-branched trees with growth that resembles long green shaving brushes. If you look at the needles closely, you will notice small white spots of resin that you might mistake for clusters of aphids.

It is important that you plant the bristlecones in a perfectly drained soil. This tree prefers loose gravelly soil. They are not heavy feeders, so a rich soil would not be necessary. Make sure the pH level of the soil is near neutral or slightly alkaline. They don't do well in acid soils.

So if you can provide what the tree needs all you need is patience.
