Red Oak Tree

It is amazing what a little acorn can bring you, a beautiful huge oak tree. The red oak tree, one of several different species of oaks, is very common in the northern forests. They live on well- drained sandy grounds, or hills, with rock or gravel soils. The black trunk will grow straight and tall. In open areas the branches can grow low and almost get as thick as the trunk! That would make it safer for climbing trees.

The leaves are glossy, dark, and thick. They are rich in tannins and can create acid mulch! In the autumn the leaves will turn a variety of colors, reds, oranges, caremel colored leaves! Sometimes in the winter, the leaves will keep and brighten the yard with the autumn colors!

The red oak is a type of tree for large yards. The tree grows tall and wide which makes a very large shaded area for the yard. The only problem with the shade is that only understory plants would be able to tolerate it, however since the leaves create acid mulch this is the perfect place for azaleas and rhododendrons, since they prefer a filtered light and need an acidic soil.

If you like squirrels and other little critters, a oak is the way to go! The acorns that fall provide food for the animals, such as squirrels and chipmunks.
