The Striped Maples scientific name is Acer pensylanicum. It is a pretty small tree and is very irregular because if grown in full sun, the trunk is usually short and branches grow low, but if grown in shade the trunk is long and slender and the branches grow up and high.
The three-loved leaves are large and showy, but the most fasinating aspect of striped maple is the bark. As a seedling the bark is red, but very quickly the bark turns to green with thin white stripes that stank out, even from far away you can see them!
This tree grows best in cool, moist, well-drained soils. It will grow in both shade and sun, and will benefit from lime where the soil is very acid. This tree is usually hard to find but is worth the search.
It is one of our least appreciated hardy, native trees. Mabey one day that will change.
