Prune Tree

Prune trees are a wonderful fruit tree to have in the back yard. Three varieties grow in zones 5 - 9, Castleton, Early Italian, and Stanley. The Early Italian is a self pollinator, which makes this tree perfect if there is only room for one. The Castleton and Stanley need a second tree to act as a pollinator to produce fruit.

Prune pits separate freely from the fruit, which makes pitting a very simple and quick task. The meat of the prune is very sweet and firm and yet juicy. Prunes are ripe in mid August and store well when frozen.

The prune tree is a semi dwarf tree at a mature height of 12 - 14 feet, and will produce fruit in 3 - 5 years. The prune tree requires full sun and will grow in all types of soil. As with many fruit trees 130 - 150 frost free days are required. Some varieties will prevail in the harsh upper midwest.
