The pecan tree is a large deciduous tree that is a species of hickory, native to south-central North America and Mexico. There are two species; native and papershell. They grow from 65-130 feet (20–40 meters) in height, but can sometimes grow taller than 145 feet (44 meters).
Pecans are grown in Israel, China, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Peru and Mexico. In the United States, pecan trees grow in South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico, Alabama, and Hawaii. The pecan is the state tree of Texas and Alabama. 1946 in Texas, the Choctaw papershell pecan tree, a hybrid, was developed.
Pecans are full of unsaturated fats and protein. They have been found to lower high cholesterol. Clinical research stated that eating a handful of pecans each day can reduce levels of high cholesterol just as good as cholesterol-lowering medications in the Journal of Nutrition.
