The scientific name for the Chestnut tree is Castanea mollissima. This species of tree was once magnificent and noble to the eastern North American forests, but then was devastated by a blight.
The Chestnut tree is rounded in outline with a short trunk and wide-spreading branches. The coarse leaves turn a yellow type golden brown color in the fall. The flowers in the spring smell foul and appear in May and June. The Chestnuts nuts are sweet, meaty, crisp and edible by humans and wildlife. Chestnuts are borne two or three together in a prickly structure, like a porcupine bristle.
This tree grows to be about 40 to 60 feet high and branches wide. You can locate them in Northern China and Korea.
